According to a new study, blood type is associated with the risk of heart attack and stroke. The new study claims that people with non-O blood type have an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. The detailed study was presented on April 30 at the European Society of Cardiology Congress.

The research was a collaborative study that gathered data from various studies including both O and non-O blood types to reach a more concrete decision.

The conducted study

Tessa Kole and colleagues from University Medical Centre Groningen, Netherlands said the risk of heart attack and stroke is linked with A, B and AB blood type that contain a high amount of blood-clotting protein.

About 48% people in the UK have O blood type. But the study has revealed that 1.3 million people having A, B and AB blood group have shown a high risk of cardiovascular diseases. The findings of the study may help medical experts to have a better understanding of people who are at potential risk of developing the disease in his lifetime. The study suggests that the medical experts should consider the person’s blood type while determining the cardiovascular risk.

The study analyzed 1.3 million people, among which 1.5 percent people belong to non-O blood group and 1.4 percent people belong to O blood group suffered from a coronary disease. Also, another study involving 1.2 million subjects have shown that 2.5 percent people with non-O blood type and 2.3 percent with O blood type have shown an increased risk of cardiovascular event.

Hence, Kole concluded that people with non-O blood type have 9% more risk of coronary diseases and 9% more risk of cardiovascular diseases especially myocardial infarction. This may be due to higher levels of blood clotting protein called Von Willebrand factor present in non-O blood groups. Also, people with non-O blood type have galectin-3 molecule present in their blood that causes inflammation.

The person’s blood group is something that cannot be controlled since it is determined by the genes that are inherited from parents. However, people with non-O blood group can take preventive measures to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. For instance, healthy diet, maintaining healthy body weight and physical activity is the key to reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke among non-O blood type people.
