Pesticides Are The Main Culprit Resulting In 75% Of Honey Contamination

According to a survey conducted by the Swiss researchers, around 75% of the world’s honey is contaminated due to the use of pesticides. The use of pesticides and chemicals is harmful to the crops and it is also indirectly affecting human beings. This study shows that the use of pesticides is harmful to the bee’s health and is affecting their survival.

The contamination of honey is greatly affecting the population of bees as these pesticides are laden with harmful chemicals. The study related to this has been published in the journal Science which shows the presence of neonicotinoids in the collected honey samples.

The honey sample was gathered from different regions of the world like North America, Asia, South America and others. The honey sample collected from North America have shown the highest contamination rate compared to other regions. Around 75% of the honey sample was contaminated by the use of pesticides and 34% of the sample have shown low contamination level which does not have a detrimental impact on bee’s health.

Although the use of pesticides is below the threshold value and does not have a negative impact on humans, bees are greatly being affected due to the use of pesticides. The honey samples collected from North America have reflected 86% contamination rate followed by Asia, Europe, and the lowest rate was seen in South America.

The compound present in neonicotinoids contain nicotine which affects the nervous system of the organisms like honey bees. This pesticide was introduced in the 1990s and since then it is widely used in all the pesticides.

The use of neonicotinoids hampers the immune system of bees making them prone to various disorders, thereby reducing their lifespan. This chemical can also affect their growth. Due to this, the use of this chemical in pesticides was partially banned in Europe. The sample which was collected by the researchers has shown the presence of 5 different type of neonicotinoids.

Hence prompt measures should be taken to reduce the impact of these pesticides on the honey bee’s health.
